Best Lake Tahoe resorts for single skiers
Tahoe has more ski areas around one lake than anywhere else in the country, which is exactly what a solo skier wants: you can pick a mountain by the morning's snow instead of by whoever you are traveling with. Two airports, a lot of bus programs, and a wide spread of terrain make it easy to do alone.
Choosing a Tahoe base on your own
Choose your side of the lake first. The South Shore puts you in a real town where a gondola runs from the street, so once you are there you can stay in town lodging and reach a big mountain on foot; an airport shuttle covers the leg from Reno. The North Shore is quieter, spread between Truckee and Olympic Valley, and better if you want terrain over nightlife. Book a camp, not just a lesson
Tahoe runs some of the best multi-day programs in the country, and multi-day is what matters when you are alone: a multi-day camp puts you with the same small group for the whole stretch, which is long enough to make ski friends instead of swapping two sentences on a chairlift. Palisades Tahoe's Women of Winter camp is the clearest example, and women should also see solo skiing as a woman for the other verified women's camps.
Tahoe weather is the variable
Storms here arrive heavy and wet, and the mountain passes and lake-shore roads can close or require chains with little notice. Skiing alone, that matters twice over: you have nobody to share the driving and nobody to notice if you set off in bad conditions. Ride a bus on storm days, check road status before committing, and keep the powder-day tree skiing for days you have company, because tree wells are the hazard that most rewards having someone with you.
